# How to Add an Order Line Status

Each company defines its own order line statuses to match how its business works. Here's how to add a new one.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Go to Settings → Products and orders → Order line statuses and click Create" />

  <Step title="Fill in the fields">
    * **Status name** — the name of the new status.
    * **External ID** — the status's ID in your external system. It's how the order line status is written in your integrations.
    * **Category** — the group of statuses this one belongs to.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Click Create to save the status" />
</Steps>

## How order categories work

Every order status goes into one of five standard categories: **Delivered**, **Canceled**, **Returned**, **Placed**, or **Paid**.

Categories drive the automatic order total. Say you import an order without a total, and it has three lines: two in the **Delivered** category and one in **Returned**. Maestra Platform calculates the total by adding up only the delivered lines.

The right category matters for event-based flows too. For example, a flow that fires when an item in an order is delivered starts once an order line moves to any status in the **Delivered** category.
