# How to find customers by Average Order Value

**Average order value** is the total value of purchases divided by the number of orders.

***

**Use case:** find customers with an average order value between **$1,000 and $5,000** over the last year.

## How average order value is calculated

* Average order value is calculated based on **placed, paid, and delivered items**.
* Even if an order was fully canceled, it still counts toward the total number of orders.

**Example:**

A customer has three orders:

* Order 1: one table \$1,500 — placed
* Order 2:
  * line 1: two chairs \$500 each — paid
  * line 2: one stool \$300 — canceled
* Order 3: one pouf \$1,000 — returned

**Total:** $1,500 + $500×2 = $2,500
**Number of orders:** 3
**Average order value:** $833
